What is emphysema? Emphysema is a chronic disease involving damage to the air sacs in the lungs. As a result, your body does not get the oxygen that it really needs. At times, you will find it difficult to catch your breath and you may also have a chronic cough and have trouble breathing during exercise. As of the year 2000, emphysema was the 4th leading cause of death in the United States.
Smoking is the number one cause of emphysema in the United States. You can stop any further damage from emphysema if you quit smoking. It is estimated that approximately 10,000,000 Americans suffer from this deadly disease and that approximately 14,000,000 Americans may already have emphysema, but have not yet been diagnosed.
